Stephen Grant Dowden

This is a picture of my grandparents Stephen Grant Dowden and Eliza Jane Rhodes Dowden. He was born on Feb 6, 1846 and died Mar 8, 1929 at age 83. She was born on Jan 10, 1873 and died Sep 1, 1934 at age 61. She was 27 years younger and his second wife.

His first wife was Rosana L. Adle who bore him 11 children. With the marriage to my grandmother 8 additional children were born. In total I had 18 aunts and uncles from these two unions.

He served during the Civil War with the 11th Louisiana Regiment, which eventually consolidated with the Crescent Regiment of New Orleans. He was wounded in the battle of Mansfield and sent to a military hospital and then removed to a private residence, where he completed his convalescence and was able to go back to his regiment. He obtained the rank of sergeant.

After the war he returned to Kisatchie, Louisiana and engaged in farming until 1892 when he moved to Natchitoches to become a deputy sheriff. In 1882 he was elected a member of the police jury and later elected as the Tax Assessor for Natchitoches Parish in 1905.

They are buried together in the American Cemetery in Natchitoches, LA.

Stephen Grant Dowden's daughter, Melissa Christine Dowden was my great-grandmother's mother (so my great-great-grandmother). Melissa's daughter Mildred Nash was my great-grandmother. I'm really fascinated by Stephen's story and was wondering if you have any more information on him. My grandparents still live in Natchitoches Parish in Kisatchie.

Hi Reuben,

I am Lib Jamison, daughter of Alice Collier Jamison. We met at my grandmother, Alease's funeral in 1973. Can you enlighten me on When Stephen Grant Dowden died?

Mom is in the nursing home in the final stages of alzheimers. I am just interested in learning this information before no one is left who can tell me anything about her mother's people. Thank you.

Hi Everyone,

My name is N. Paul Chance. Stephen Grant Dowden was my great grant father. I am a descendant of his marriage to GGMa Adle. I have a picture of Stephen Grant Dowden when he was 15, just a year before he joined the CSA. He was wounded at the battle of Mansfield, LA and ultimately paroled by the Union Army at the end of the War. He went on to become the Tax Collecetor for Natchitoches Parish. His 2nd wife Eliza Rhodes ws the first cousin of my grrandmother Ada Bell Rhodes Carter Dowden who married Willis Stev Dowden, son of SG Dowden. I would really like to hear from others of the SGD lineage. SGD's father's burial site is unknow to us. We have an old picute that is supposed to be og Hugh Dowden, SGD's father. SGDs grand parents James and Patsy Nash are buried in unmarked graves in the rural community of Mink not far from where I live in Kisatchie, LA..on the old Dowden homeplace.

I have not checked my blogs for comments in months as I sort of lost interest in it. But, was happy to see commends made by distance relatives. Paul I will contact you via e-mail, hopefully today. Kitty, I would like to know more about you. You must be the daughter of the Dowden's from Long Beach, California? I visited with your parents and a daughter in 1963 when I was in the Navy stationed down in San Diego but lost contact after that though I believe your Dad kept in touch with my mother until her death. Please contact me via e-mail at reubencollier@gmail.com.

My Great Great Grandfather was Stephen Grant Dowden. He was my father James Albert Dowden's Grandfather. Stephen Grant is well known in the Dowden family from west Louisiana.

I have stood at the battle grounds in Mansfield where the 27th Crescent stood and where he was wounded.

I understood that while he convalesced in Alexandria he was captured by the Blue Bellies. He had to take the oath to get release from his captures, and yes after taking the oath he went back to his unit to finish out the war.

He was always recognized as a great man in Nacognoches Parish. I have also stood next to his grave
